Useful info while in Sofia

What to Do:

Sofia Free Tour: a perfect way to get a grasp of the local history and culture in a two-hour pedestrian walk in Sofia. You don’t need to book in advance, you can just show up at 11AM or 2PM at the Palace of Justice.

• If you don't feel like walking for so long, you can still visit the Alexander Nevski cathedral and the Russian church.

• If you feel like doing a cultural activity, we recommend the Kvadrat 500 National gallery where you can see an incredible collection of both Bulgarian and foreign items.  

• You can also go for a stroll on the pedestrian street, "Vitoshka" where there are plenty of restaurants and nice cafés (please check their rating on Google first).


Where to Eat:

• If you find yourself downtown, you can try Shtastlivetsa or Constantinoff for lunch/dinner.

• If you want to go for an Armenian meal in the center, you can go to Egur-egur and then try an exquisite dessert at Marashlian pastry.

• If you feel like tasting the local Bulgarian cuisine, grab a cab and go to Vodenitzata.

• Last but not least, you can relax in the garden of Umami, the restaurant of the hotel where you will be staying.

 o Tipping: We usually tip around 10% in cash. So even if you pay 20 BGN by card for your meal, you can leave a 2 BGN coin as a tip.

If you want to order:
We don't have Uber Eats but we do have Glovo or Takeaway that you can use in a browser or as an app.


Transportation:

• Please note that we don't have Uber in Bulgaria, so you would have to use a regular taxi. If you are at the hotel, you can ask at the reception and they will call one for you but in case you need to get a taxi yourself, please try to only use Yellow, OK Taxi, TaxiMe.

• If you want a premium taxi service, you can use Volt Taxi.

• If you catch a cab from the street, please always check the fare that's written on the back window as some taxis are fraudulent. Please note that you usually can only pay cash and that the amount shouldn't exceed 10 to 15 BGN in one direction.

 o Tipping: In taxis, you usually round up. For example if the amount is 12.50 BGN, you would give 13 BGN.


Get Help:

• In case of an emergency, call 112 and they will redirect you to the national service needed.

• If you need urgent medical assistance, you can go to Pirogov Emergency Hospital.

• In the case of any force majeure circumstance, please notify the local AGBU Sofia Chapter immediately.
